HUMAN
SUBJECT TRAINING FAQ
WHO NEEDS TO COMPLETE THE
TRAINING MODULE?
All Faculty, Researchers, Students & Staff that who work with
human subjects or their identifiable data. Selected departmental & control
point personnel will also complete the training. (Including the Vice Chancellor
for Research, the Human Subjects Committee and Sponsored Projects staff.)
WHY DO I NEED TO DO THIS?
Effective October 1, 2000, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is
requiring mandatory training for its researchers who use human subjects.
UCSB is implementing this requirement campus-wide to ensure that everyone using
human subjects has the best possible information on how to protect those who
make our research possible. All UC campuses and many other universities
are developing similar training programs.
WHAT IS THIS MODULE
AND HOW MUCH TIME IS IT GOING TO TAKE?
The HS training module has been developed specifically for the type
of research conducted at UCSB. It consists of a selected history of human
subjects use, what guides UCSB's HSC and some current HS policy & case
studies with a short multiple-choice test. It shouldn't take more than 30
minutes.
CAN I FAIL?
Not without trying very hard. The module is an
educational tool, not a testing tool. You cannot advance through the questions
unless a correct answer is chosen. Our system only records that the
training has been completed, not how many times any one question is attempted.
CAN I JUST TAKE A LOOK AROUND
THE MODULE BEFORE I LOGIN FOR REAL?
Yes, of course. On the Introduction page you can choose to
LOGIN or be a GUEST. As a GUEST, no record is kept of your visit and no
data is stored if you take the test.
WHEN DO I HAVE TO HAVE
FINISHED THIS?
NIH INVESTIGATORS: The training must be completed by the time your
next NIH proposal is awarded to UCSB or 1/1/2001, whichever is sooner.
NON-NIH INVESTIGATORS: The training must be completed before any of your HS protocols are approved after 1/1/2001.
WHAT DO I NEED TO MAKE SURE I
GET CREDIT FOR COMPLETING THE MODULE?
Faculty/Professional Researchers with an active HS protocol in the last 5
years
Your Faculty Key Code can be found in the MyInfo section of ORahs. This code is for your use &
that of your students, staff & collaborators who work with human subjects under your auspices. Additional
information collected during the login process will allow us to create unique identifiers for each individual
who completes training with your ID code.
It is your responsibility as Faculty Advisor/Principal Investigator to ensure that all personnel working
on your projects have completed training before they work with human subjects or their identifiable data.

Contact the Human Subjects Coordinator at hsc@research.ucsb.edu
to have a code issued to you. This code is for your use & that of your
students, staff & collaborators who work with human subjects under your
auspices. Additional information collected during the login process will allow

your ID code. It is your responsibility as Faculty Advisor/Principal
Investigator to ensure that all personnel working on your projects have
completed training before they work with human subjects or their identifiable
data.
Students and others who cannot conduct research at UCSB
without a faculty sponsor
Contact your faculty sponsor for his/her code. You must complete
training before you work with human subjects or their identifiable data.
